Disney and Marvel have addressed some speculation around Black Panther 2, confirming that they will not recast Chadwick Boseman for his character, T’Challa, in the upcoming sequel.

As part of their Investor Day event on Thursday (December 10), it was confirmed that Boseman’s legacy in the film will be honored. The film, which will open July 8, 2022 and is being written and directed by Ryan Coogler, will explore “explore the world of Wakanda & the rich characters introduced in the first film.”

Boseman's would be 44th birthday fell on November 29 and the two media giants paid tribute to the late actor with a newly-updated introduction to the film on Netflix featuring Marvel’s page-turning edit with photos and footage of Boseman in and out of character as T'Challar in scenes from Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. As you know, the star died on August 28 after a four-year battle with colon cancer.

Marvel and Disney have been candid about pursuing their plans to film Black Panther 2 in July 2021. "There's only one Chadwick, and he's no longer with us," executive producer Victoria Alonso said in an interview, according to Deadline. "Sadly, our king has died in real life, not only in fiction, and we're taking a little time to see how we continue the story and how to honor this chapter of what has unexpectedly happened to us, so painful and terrible to be honest." Among the stars set to return to the sequel include Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett.
