New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell wants Dick Clark Productions to remove Louisiana singer-songwriter Lauren Daigle from its Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve broadcast. Daigle drew ire from the city after performing for a crowded rally last month.
Daigle performed at a "Let Us Worship" rally in the French Quarter on November 7, despite the event not having a permit and violating public health guidelines. Around 400 people attended the outdoor rally, NOLA reports, but most weren't wearing masks.
In a letter to Dick Clark Productions, Cantrell told Amy Thurlow, president of the company, that New Orleans is grateful for the production, but asked that Daigle be removed from the lineup, saying she "cannot abide the participation of an entertainer who put our people in harm's way."
"Ms. Daigle cannot and should not be rewarded with national media exposure and a public spotlight," Cantrell wrote. "She harmed our people, she risked the lives of our residents, and she strained our first responders in a way that is unconscionable — in the midst of a public health crisis."
Though Daigle hasn't spoken publicly about the event, WWL Radio reports, she told Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser it was just a misunderstanding. He said she was riding her bicycle in the French Quarter and stopped to pray with attendees at the rally. According to Nungesser, she only performed when someone asked her to.
As of Friday, Thurlow has not responded to Cantrell's letter.
