Are you bustling with holiday cheer and looking for a socially-distance activity in North Portland? This holiday lights show has you covered.
Winter Wonderland is one of the area's most popular events. KATU said it's naturally socially distant since it happens on the Portland International Raceway. The coronavirus pandemic prompted events to change up their approach, but Winter Wonderland organizers didn't need to do much. The lights show is drive-thru only this year, and there will be no dog-walking or bike-riding nights.
Not only does it make for a comfortable and safe activity, but it may help people. All proceeds from the event go toward the Sunshine Division, which has fed and clothed Portland families for nearly 100 years. Kyle Camberg, the Executive Director of the Sunshine Division, told reporters almost every night has sold out.
"We're serving more families than we ever have before in our 98 years," Kyle Camberg said, "We're actually serving ten times as many households since April. Frankly, it's unlike anything we've ever seen before, so the success of this event is going to ensure that we're able to feed thousands of families every single week."
Safeway, a sponsor of Winter Wonderland, also said they are helping Sunshine Division feed local kids breakfast. "Now through Christmas, you can buy Santa bucks at the register. Those will translate into meals the Sunshine Division can delivery to families in need," KATU reported.
Winter Wonderland runs now through January 2, and you must purchase your tickets in advance. For ticket prices, times and more, visit their website.
