Genealogy can lead to life-changing news, and one woman recently learned that her real father is actually her family’s doctor.

And she’s not alone.

Dr. Philip Peven, now 104, likely fathered hundreds of children by using his own sperm to impregnate women throughout his four-decade career, something a group of doctors did for decades. For Peven, it started in the 1940s.

Jamie Hall’s ancestry.com DNA test linked her to Peven. She shared her story with WXYZ, Detroit’s ABC affiliate, in hopes of encouraging others born from the 1950s through the 1980s to consider a DNA test if they were born from a donor doctor. Hall isn’t upset about the results, and believes people have a right to know, she told the station.

Ancestry aims to help people “learn more about themselves by connecting them to their past so they can gain meaningful insights to impact their future,” according to the company. It uses more than 27 billion online records from more than 80 countries.

Hall’s parents have both died, and neither of them knew that Peven used his own sperm to impregnate Hall's mother at Detroit’s Grace Hospital when she struggled to conceive, Hall explained to WXYZ.

“I said, ‘did you ever think that DNA would bring back all your biological children to you?’ And he said, 'oh, no,’” Hall recalled of a conversation with her biological father after getting her DNA results.

And the family revelations didn’t stop there.

“He had done more research in this and said, ‘you have another half brother that you can call today,’” she added. “‘It’s his birthday and he’d love to get a sister on his birthday.’”
