A record-setting first winter snow storm hit the Northeast overnight and continued Thursday (December 17) morning.

Binghamton, New York set a new two-day personal record with nearly 40 inches of snowfall, breaking the previous record of 35.3 inches set in March 2018, a National Weather Service spokesperson confirmed to the Associated Press.

Williamsport Regional Airport in Montoursville, Pennsylvania reported a record 24.7 inches of snow as of Thursday morning, which the most in the area since January 1964 (24.1 inches,) the National Weather Service in State College confirmed via the AP.

The AP reports most of Western and Central Pennsylvania had snow accumulations exceed double digits on Wednesday. Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island also set new records for snowfall on December 17, with 9.1 inches of snow falling in Boston and 4.4 inches in Providence since midnight, NWS Boston reports.

“That is the new record right now, and it will probably be more before it’s done,” said Bryce Williams of NWS Boston via the AP.

Boston's previous December 17 snowfall record was 6.4 inches set in December 2013. High elevations in the Berkshires accumulated the most snow in Massachusetts, with numerous areas reporting more than a foot and heavy snowfall expected to continue through Thursday afternoon.

The overnight storm also exceeded all snowfall from the previous winter in New York City, which reported 6.5 inches covering Central Park, although it was less than the 12 inches initially predicted for the area. New York City capped out at 4.8 inches during the previous winter.
