Rapper Lil Yachty is defending a Texas teen boy who was suspended from high school for wearing nail polish.
Lil Yachty (born Miles Parks McCollum) told TMZ on Tuesday that people should be allowed to express themselves however they want.
"It's about to be 2021. Why do we still have barriers?" Lil Yachty said. "If someone wants to express themselves in any type of way. As long as it's not harming anyone or bringing anybody down, they should be allowed to do so."
Trevor Wilkinson, 17, was given in-school suspension on November 30 for violating the dress code at Clyde High School in Clyde, Texas, which is 15 miles east of Abilene. Male students are not allowed to wear nail polish, according to the Clyde Consolidated Independent School District dress code, which Wilkinson calls discriminatory.
Wilkinson is no longer suspended, but he's fighting to make the school's dress code more inclusive.
"Why is it against dress code for a man to be comfortable with his masculinity and defy the gender norms society has imposed on us?” Wilkinson asked the Clyde CISD school board on Monday.
Lil Yachty said he wants to reach out to the teen.
The "One Night" rapper was wearing Christmas nail art when TMZ caught up with him outside of the Los Angeles International Airport. He also said plans to launch his own nail polish line called Crete.
