The NFL wants to honor healthcare workers and plans to invite those who have been vaccinated to attend Super Bowl LV in Tampa Bay on February 7, 2021.
The league is still working out the logistics with local health officials in Florida.
“We will do this in a safe and responsible way,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “As we know, these frontline workers are true American heroes, and we owe them our ongoing gratitude, and we also know we need to rely on them for months to come to distribute vaccines and continue to treat all those that are ill from COVID and other illnesses.”
The league is also working with health officials to plan the week of festivities that take place around the Super Bowl. The NFL will likely have to scale back some of the activities which are expected to be held along the Tampa Riverwalk in downtown Tampa Bay.
While the NFL is expecting to have fans in attendance at Super Bowl LV, Florida is one of the states that has been hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic. As of Friday (December 18), Florida has the third-highest number of cases at 1.15 million and is ranked third in deaths with more than 20,000.
