Ed Sheeran has returned with a brand-new song!
The singer-songwriter set social media ablaze this weekend when he announced a special “Christmas present” releasing Monday (December 21). The Grammy winner kept his promise by sharing a new song titled “Afterglow” just hours ago and he accompanied the release with a special performance video, which finds Sheeran performing the record on his guitar outside in the dark.
"We were love-drunk, waiting on a miracle/ Trying to find ourselves in the winter snow/ So alone in love like the world had disappeared/ Oh, I won't be silent and I won't let go/ I will hold on tighter 'til the afterglow/ And we'll burn so bright 'til the darkness softly clears,” Sheeran belts out on the song.
“Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you,” Sheeran shared about the song on Instagram. “It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy!”
The song was released this morning, marking the first tune he’s put out since announcing his indefinite hiatus after wrapping up his years-long tour in 2018. At the time, Sheeran informed followers of his break from music after tying the knot to his high school sweetheart, Cherry Seaborn, with whom he recently welcomed a baby girl named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.
In October 2019, Sheeran’s manager Stuart Camp told the BBC he’s already started recording his fifth studio album. “He’s already started writing and recording,” Camp told the outlet. “We won’t let anything come out that’s substandard… We’ve done that on the previous two albums where we have to keep going until we absolutely know that the thing we come back with is undeniable.”
