Two passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight from New York City to Atlanta opened the cabin door and jumped off the plane moments before takeoff.
Flight 462 was taxiing to the runway when it came to an abrupt stop as the emergency slide deployed. The couple and their service dog slid down the slide onto the runway.
One of the passengers, Brian Plummer, told the New York Times that the couple changed seats multiple times as the flight boarded. When the plane departed from the gate, the man stood up and ignored orders from the flight crew to return to his seat.
He claimed he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and told the flight attendant: "If I sit down, I'll freak out."
After jumping off the plane, the couple was taken into custody while the plane returned to the gate, where all the passengers deplaned.
It is unclear what charges if any, the couple will face.
Maintenance technicians evaluated the aircraft after the incident, and it is scheduled to return to service on Tuesday (December 22) evening.
