The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has announced charges against a Detroit porch pirate.
Sade Scott, 33, faces two counts of misdemeanor mail theft in each case. In once instance, she’s accused of taking packages from a Sorrento Avenue residence on Saturday afternoon (December 19), stealing only the items and leaving boxes in the driveway. In another incident, Scott, of Southfield, allegedly stole a package from a Detroit man’s porch on Appoline Street the same day, the Detroit News reported Wednesday (December 23).
According to the prosecutor’s office, the man contacted police when he realized his package was stolen.
Authorities identified Scott as a suspect the following day, on December 20. Police conducted a traffic stop on Joy Road and placed her under arrest.
Scott was apparently in a stolen vehicle and possessed other people’s packages and credit cards.
Detroit Police Department Capt. Michael Chambers told the Detroit News it’s possible Scott could have stolen packages from other areas.
Law enforcement officials nationwide have warned residents of porch pirates, especially as people turn to online shopping around the holidays and during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re always trying to remind people, not only to lock their doors, but make sure their vehicles are secured either in their garage or driveways and to remove items from plain view,” Tyler Grigg of the Madison Police Department in Wisconsin recently advised. “A lot of these crimes — package theft, car theft, and theft from vehicles — are crimes of opportunity. So if we can do our due diligence to mitigate that, that would be in our best interest.”
