New Year’s Eve is around the corner, and the Omaha Police Department issued a statement reminding the public to celebrate safely.
Specifically, the department released a statement Monday (December 28) to remind citizens of gun safety and of the city’s fireworks ordinance.
“Celebratory gunfire remains a problem in many cities, particularly during the holiday season, and sadly, it can often have tragic results when innocent people are hit by the bullets and injured or killed,” the statement reads. “Any bullet discharged from a hun, even into the sky, must land at some location, and the risks are significant for injury or death.”
“The Omaha Police Department and the City of Omaha are committed to its policy of zero tolerance of illegal gun use and its initiative to combat gun violence in our community,” the department continues. “During the holidays, we want to remind the public that discharging a firearm within the city limits is not only illegal but potentially deadly and any violates will be arrested.”
Omaha’s fireworks ordinance states that citizens who are at least 16 years old — or 12 to 15 years old with adult supervision — can discharge consumer fireworks beginning at 5 p.m. on December 31. It must end by 1 a.m. on January 1.
