Omaha families looking for a socially-distant New Year’s Eve celebration can catch a fireworks display near CHI Health Center and TD Ameritrade Park.
The New Year’s Eve Fireworks Spectacular — one of the largest displays in the area — will kick off at 7 p.m. on Thursday (December 31), with the opportunity to watch from vehicles or even from home. It’ll be the last signature Holiday Lights Festival event, located near 10th and Cass Streets.
Fireworks watchers can park for free at CHI Health Event Center lots A, B and C, and Gallup lots, which open for parking one hour before the fireworks show starts. Park Omaha will also allow free parking at meters after 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Fireworks will launch from CHI Health Event Center lot D, so that lot will be closed to the public, according to organizers.
“Produced by J&M Displays, each shell is choreographed to open on cue to a musical score developed specifically for this event,” the Holiday Lights Festival states. “Spectators are encouraged to tune in to STAR 104.5 in the warmth and safety of their vehicle or home to celebrate a musical accompaniment Everyday Heroes – which will honor the incredible spirit of the community during challenging times, while also honoring all the front-line and essential workers who have been working tirelessly to keep our community as safe as possible during the pandemic.”
The Omaha Police Department issued a reminder of gun safety and the city’s fireworks ordinance on Monday (December 28). Citizens who are at least 16 years old — or 12 to 15 years old with adult supervision — can discharge consumer fireworks beginning at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. It must end by 1 a.m. on January 1.
