No New Year's Eve events will happen on December 31, but crowds are still expected at Fremont Street, which has members of the state's COVID task force concerned.

The Fremont Street Experience will not host a light show or live entertainment, but the downtown mall will still be open to the public. Members of Nevada's COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force believe that tourists will still head to Fremont Street, especially since the nearby Plaza Hotel and Casino will have a fireworks show, KTNV reported.

“They’re looking at something that will attract thousands of people down there and we are quite concerned about that,” said Terry Reynolds with the Nevada Department of Business and Industry.

It's unclear how many people will be allowed on Fremont Street for New Year's Eve, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported. It's estimated that up to 14,000 people will show up though.

Only people 21 years and older will be allowed on Fremont Street and will have to pay a $25 "security fee," according to the Fremont Street Experience website. Visitors will also have to wear masks, maintain social distance, and answer COVID screener questions.

“The best way to ring in the new year is in small groups with advance reservations at your favorite restaurant, casino, resort or attraction or from the comfort of your home,” according to a statement released by Clark County and the city of Las Vegas.
