Nashville Mayor John Cooper announced he's entered quarantine after his wife, Laura Fitzgerald Cooper, reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.
"Out of an abundance of caution, I am quarantining after Laura has tested positive for COVID-19," Mayor Cooper shared on his Twitter account Tuesday (January 4) afternoon. "She is currently not exhibiting any symptoms. Like thousands of Nashvillians, I'm following CDC-recommended best practices and am working remotely."
Vice Mayor Jim Schulman confirmed Cooper's positive coronavirus test to FOX 17 News, prior to Mayor Cooper's tweet, but noted that Laura Cooper reportedly hasn't shown any symptoms as of Tuesday afternoon.
It has not been confirmed whether or not Mayor Cooper has taken a COVID-19 test since news of his wife's positive results.
Deputy Mayor Brenda Haywood will appear before the Metro Council during Tuesday night's meeting in Mayor Cooper's absence, FOX 17 News reports.
On Tuesday, the Metro Public Health Department announced a total of 71,936 total COVID-19 cases in Davidson County, which includes 345 new cases in a 24-hour span and 6,684 active cases, as well as a 10.18% percent positive rate among 83,555 positive tests and 820,808 total tests conducted.
The health department also confirmed a total of 495 deaths in relation to the coronavirus as of Tuesday.
