Sen. Sherrod Brown aims to push for $2,000 checks to citizens for COVID-19 relief, pledging to get “real resources to Ohio communities.”

Brown made his remarks about COVID-19 relief checks and more on Wednesday (January 6) afternoon, as Georgia runoff election results appeared to tip the scale to the Democrats in the Senate. That also means that Brown will lead the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, cleveland.com reported.

“We need to make sure it’s just not Wall Street that recovers, that everybody recovers in this recovery, because we all remember what happened after the last recession,” Brown said on Wednesday. “Big corporations did better than ever but communities like ours struggled for years.”

In late December, President Donald Trump advocated to raise stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000. When Democrats pushed to vote on the increase, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell apparently blocked efforts to schedule a quick vote.

Brown added Wednesday he hopes McConnell “wants to join us and not block things.” He also said that as the chair of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, he aims to advocate for housing stability and to help citizens having to put too much income on rent.
