Even during a pandemic, business can thrive. Such is the case for a 13-year-old girl from Charlotte, who is creating sweet treats and raising money for college with her new bakery business.

Yari Dariela, an 8th grade student at A.C.E. Academy Charter School, created Dariela's Sweet Taste in March after receiving a Kitchen Aid mixer for her birthday. She has always loved baking, but her business has allowed her develop her skills, both and organization.

"People started ordering from different places in Charlotte and Concord as well," said Dariela, "and they started ordering cakes and everything and I just started having to buy more supply more often."

What started as chocolate-dipped strawberries has grown into full handcrafted desserts. Her flourishing business has helped her learn how to make tres leches cake and rum cake with raisins. She even taught herself how to make sugar-free cake for her grandfather who has diabetes.

Given her young age, Dariela was surprised by the business she has gotten so far. She has made around 30 cakes, with the handcrafted desserts ranging from $30 to $90. She told WCNC she plans on saving the money she makes from her business for college.
