A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a New Orleans woman delivering groceries to her elderly in-laws. According to police, the suspect's father turned him in.

"This arrest was the result of his father taking the responsibility where parents of this child learned of their son committing this senseless act," said Police Chief Sean Ferguson. "He turned his son in."

The teenage suspect, whose name has not been released, confessed to police his role in the shooting. He is now facing charges of second-degree murder and booked into the Juvenile Justice Center.

On Sunday (January 3), 52-year-old Anita LaViege was driving near her in-laws' home in New Orleans East when she was confronted by two male suspects, one whom was armed with a rifle. They walked in front of her car and fired several shots. LaViege managed to drive a short ways away but crashed into another vehicle nearby. She did not survive the fatal shooting.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell weighed in on the case, saying she was grateful that one of the suspects turned himself in.

"This was the right thing to do, and I want to commend that family for doing it," she said.

With one suspect charged, police continue to search for the other person involved in LaViege's homicide. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call Crimestoppers.
