'Vogue' Addresses The Kamala Harris Cover Controversy: Read The Statement

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris graces the February issue of Vogue, but her team and folks on Twitter weren’t happy with the final product.

While many criticized the fashion magazine's choice in lighting and casual styling, it seems as if there's validity in the public's disapproval. A source close to Harris told ET that Vogue and her team agreed on a print interview and photoshoot, but the image that ended up on the print cover was intended for the inside of the magazine. More specifically, the photo of her in a blue suit with a gold backdrop was the agreed cover look. Unfortunately, the insider said that at no point did Vogue editors inform Harris that they were switching the cover images.

"In this moment where the country is so divided, where we need serious leaders, the blue and gold shot represents that," the insider told the celebrity gossip outlet. "That would never have been approved, and Harris' team is extremely disappointed."

Vogue hit back at the buzz with a statement in which the mag details that the blue suit image is also on a digital cover of the mag. "The team at Vogue loved the images Tyler Mitchell shot and felt the more informal image captured Vice President-elect Harris's authentic, approachable nature -- which we feel is one of the hallmarks of the Biden/Harris administration," the statement read. "To respond to the seriousness of this moment in history, and the role she has to play leading our country forward, we're celebrating both images of her as covers digitally."

Meanwhile, an insider at Vogue revealed that the mag wanted to capture her as a leader and an average person. Part of that approach was Harris styling herself for the shoot. In fact, both of the looks were selected by her team.
