The Dallas City Council unanimously agreed on Wednesday night to rename a portion of South Lamar Street after Botham Jean, the 26-year-old accountant shot in his apartment by an off-duty police officer in 2018.

Botham Jean Boulevard will be about four miles long and run between Interstate 30 to South Central Expressway. The apartment complex that Jean and his killer, Amber Guyger, lived in will also be on the newly renamed street.

The name change was bittersweet for Jean's family, who spoke at the City Council meeting.

“My family trusts in the Lord’s power and are trying to move from the hurt and pain to new horizons. One wish is that Botham’s name will be remembered and never ever be forgotten. The renaming of Lamar Street is one way in which our wish can be honored," Allison Jean, Botham's mother, told the Council.

After the Council vote, Allison Jean told the Dallas Morning News that she was grateful "but it doesn’t bring my son back.”

Botham Jean was shot by Guyger on September 6, 2018, and died a few days later from his injuries. Guyger lived one floor below Jean, but entered his apartment thinking it was hers after returning home from her shift as a Dallas police officer. She shot Jean, believing he was an intruder.

Guyger was convicted of murder in October 2019 and is serving a 10 years prison sentence.
