A North Carolina couple is mourning the loss of their cat after their Alexander County home caught fire overnight. They credit the beloved pet for saving their lives.

Misty Hudler was asleep in the living room when a tugging sensation jolted her awake shortly after midnight on Friday (January 15). It turned out to be her cat, Sir Purr. When she realized what was happening, she saw that a fire had spread across the back of her Bethlehem home.

"Well, he actually pulled on my ponytail on the back of my head, and he woke me up to the fire," she said. Hudler immediately jumped into action, waking up her boyfriend and escaping through a blown-out window.

A reporter with WSOC arrived at the home later Friday morning and managed to see where the fire burned through the roof and destroyed the inside.

After searching for their beloved Sir Purr, who they thought had escaped during the fire, they realized the cat sadly did not survive. Despite the loss, Hudler credits Sir Purr for saving their lives.

"If he wouldn't [have woken her up], I probably would not have gotten out of there."

The source of the fire is currently unknown, but investigators are working to determine the cause.
