Data shows that Arizona is leading the world in the average number of COVID-19 cases per capita. But despite the case numbers, the state is starting to show a downward trend.

On average, the state of Arizona saw about 121.6 newly confirmed cases over the past seven days, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. California is the second-highest jurisdiction in the world with 109.5 cases.

The Republic of Ireland nearly shot past Arizona, as well as the rest of the world, about a week ago, but didn't.

Arizona is pretty used to being at the top of COVID-19 charts, reported ABC 15.

The state has been the world's top hotspot at least three different times now.

According to the data from Johns Hopkins University, Arizona is also leading the world in new COVIS-19 deaths per 100,000 people over the past seven days. The state is seeing about 2.16 average new deaths from the virus, which is much higher than the runner-up, Czechia.

Arizona has the eleventh-highest per capita cumulative death counts in the world with 151.7 deaths per 100,000 people. New Jersey has the second-highest with 228.8 per 100,000 people.
