From long commutes and traffic congestion to weekend drives along scenic backroads, Americans spend a lot of time in cars. While some states have well-paved roads and strict traffic laws, others leave much to be desired with the state of their infrastructure.

To help figure out which is which, a new study by WalletHub compared each state in the country to determine which are the best to drive in.

So, where did Louisiana rank on the list?

Number 33

The Pelican State may have ranked in the bottom half of the list, but it received high marks in specific areas. While Louisiana ranked lower in cost of ownership and maintenance, it came in ninth for safety and fifth for lowest average gas prices.

The top 10 states are listed below in order:

  1. Texas
  2. Indiana
  3. North Carolina
  4. Iowa
  5. Tennessee
  6. Kentucky
  7. Maine
  8. Idaho
  9. South Dakota
  10. Ohio

To determine the list, WalletHub compared each state using four factors: cost of ownership and maintenance; traffic and infrastructure; safety; and access to vehicles and maintenance. These factors were then evaluated using 31 relevant metrics, including average gas prices, road quality, average commute time by car, traffic fatality rate, car theft rate, gas stations per capita, and more.
