Getting stuck in traffic is never fun, and researchers are learning that it may be bad for your wallet, too.

According to INRIX, congestion costed U.S. drivers $88 billion in 2019 and an average of 99 hours of their time. While research shows congestion is overall down due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year, there are other headaches to worry about driving. Road quality, gas prices and more are something to consider when heading out.

WalletHub looked at each state to see which ones have the better driving experiences and which ones are the worst. Where does Washington rank?

The Evergreen State came at No. 48, making it one of the worst states to drive in, according to the study. While the state scored much higher in metrics like safety and access to auto repair shops, researchers dinged it being among the states with the highest average gas prices.

When it came to Washington's neighbors, Oregon came in the No. 37 spot and Idaho made it into the Top 10.

Here are the Top 10 best states to drive in, according to WalletHub:

  1. Texas
  2. Indiana
  3. North Carolina
  4. Iowa
