A North Carolina family is counting their blessings and thanking the "guardian angels" that saved them after a quick-moving fire at their Burke County home Wednesday morning (January 20). Officials in Drexel said city workers noticed smoke and flames coming from the home and immediately rushed into action.

"We woke up to banging on the door," said Amber Mathews. "'Get out, get out. Your house is on fire.' They are guardian angels sent from above."

Mathews and her family didn't realize the house was on fire until the city workers alerted them. According to WSOC, smoke could be seen coming from the home for miles along North Main Street. A city work crew was checking power lines in the area when the noticed the fire.

"Coming by and saw the smoke coming out of the gables of the house and went out and beat on the doors to get they guys out of the house," said Johnny Rowe, a worker with the city.

Mathews is grateful for the workers' quick thinking that saved her and her family's lives.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you for keeping your eyes open and watching for someone else," said Mathews. "It's hard in times like these. You're not always focused on things around you."

Firefighters were able to get the fast-moving fire under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but firefighters who first arrived on the scene said the fire appeared to start in the attic.
