A Sacramento deputy and K9 were killed in a shootout with a suspect at Cal Expo on Monday night (January 18), according to CBS13.
Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones said a second deputy was injured in the shooting and is currently in stable condition. The 40-year-old suspect was shot and killed by deputies.
The names of the second deputy injured and the suspect have not been released.
The deputy lost in the shooting was identified as Adam Gibson, a six-year veteran of the Sacramento police force, according to CBS13.
The K9 killed in the shooting was named Riley and had been with the department for three years, said the sheriff's office.
.@SacSheriff Deputy Adam Gibson & partner K-9 Riley went out on patrol to protect their community—tragically it would be their last shift—both shot & killed in the line of duty by a suspect on parole. Deputy Gibson leaves behind a wife & infant child.

Sheriff Jones said the incident started as a vehicle stop a little after 10:00 P.M. near Arden Way and Morse Avenue and ended on Cal Expo grounds where the suspect crashed.
After the suspect reportedly refused to communicate with the deputies, they released the K9 officer. The suspect then began shooting killing Gibson and the K9 and injuring the other deputy.
The suspect was then shot and killed by deputies.
California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement on Tuesday, January 19, following Gibson's death.
"Jennifer and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sheriff’s Deputy Gibson and the departmental canine who lost their lives in this tragic incident," Newsom said in the statement. "Our thoughts are also with the Deputy who was injured last night. Deputy Gibson will forever be remembered for his selfless sacrifice and his commitment to providing safety and security for the Sacramento community."
