Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are opening up about the struggles they faced over the course of the ongoing pandemic. Like so many of us, the pair found themselves spending a lot more time at home. Without work or social activities to distract them, Bell says she had her husband found they "needed a therapy brush-up" to work through some of their problems.
"We've learned everything about each other because we haven't been able to leave!" Bell said of her time with Shepard during the pandemic. "Everyone's proclivities are kind of bubbling over because we're all caged in with each other."
As a result, Bell and Shepard decided to go back to therapy together. "Dax and I, when we started this pandemic, were at a point in our marriage where we definitely needed a little therapy brush-up," Bell explained to People. "Every couple of years, we're like, 'We're being very antagonistic towards each other,' and we don't want that. We go back to therapy and figure out what I'm not doing that's best for you and what you're not doing that's best for me, and how we can serve this team goal better. It's been incredibly helpful."
Not only did Shepard and Bell face struggles related to the pandemic over the past year, but Shepard also relapsed on prescription pain medication after 16 years of sobriety. He opened up about his relapse, including how supportive Bell was, during an episode of his Armchair Expert podcast back in September.
During an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show this past fall, Bell once again spoke about how therapy played an integral role in their marriage in 2020, especially after Shepard's relapse. "One of the main reasons I love him is he's also addicted to growth," Bell explained. "He's addicted to evolving. And he was like, 'I don't want to risk this family and I did, so let's put new things in place to make sure it doesn't happen again.' We're going back to therapy. I love that he's addicted to growth and I will continue to stand by him because he's very, very worth it."
