Smokers may be getting the COVID-19 sooner than others since they're more vulnerable to severe symptoms and even death from the virus. KING 5 asked the Washington State Department of Health about this, and officials said "yes" -- in some cases.
"Adult smokers of any age are at increased risk for COVID-19 and are prioritized for vaccine in Washington," a spokesperson told reporters. This isn't happening yet, however.
In fact, it may not be until spring or summer that smokers will get the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the vaccination rollout plan. Smokers are considered part of Tier 3 for vaccine priority, which includes people with two or more risk factors, such as cancer, diabetes and obesity.
"Washington state is currently prioritizing healthcare workers, first responders, people 65 and older and some caregivers. Next, critical workers, such as those employed in grocery stores and public transportation, and educators 50 and older will get the vaccine," according to KING 5.
Gov. Jay Inslee announced Monday (January 18) a goal to vaccinate 45,000 Washingtonians a day, but such plans present challenges to vaccine providers. KOMO also noted that the goal is higher than the state's current vaccine allocation from the federal government.
