Hoosiers Are Obsessed With Indy's Newest Burger Joint

Hoosiers are waiting in lines that spill onto the street just to get a bite from California Burger.

The burger joint on West 16th Street opened on January 1 and business has been booming since then. New customers find the restaurant through word of mouth or social media because California Burger doesn't advertise.

It's working too because people are willing to wait in the drive-thru line for more than two hours. Owner Bashar Hugais told WISH that everything is fresh and made to order, and that he's grateful for customers' patience.

Hugais, 28, moved to Indianapolis from California three months ago to be with his brother, who co-owns California Burger.

The brothers weren't sure about opening a restaurant during the pandemic but decided to take a chance when they saw an open storefront on 16th Street.

"This has potential. This has a chance. We took this chance and we’re forever grateful that we did. The response we’ve gotten is amazing," Hugais said.

California Burger is defying the odd by succeeding as other restaurants struggle through the pandemic.

In an Instagram post, the owners wrote that they're thankful for their customers and are trying to reduce wait times.
