Less than 24 hours after the Houston Texans named their new head coach, quarterback Deshaun Watson announced that he wants to be traded.
The Texans picked David Culley as the new coach, the Houston Chronicle reported on Wednesday. He replaces former head coach and general manager Bill O'Brien, who was fired in October after a 0-4 start to the season.
On Thursday morning, Watson requested a trade, sources told ESPN. Watson is unhappy with the Texans after he found out through Twitter that the team hired a general manager and made other off-season moves.
Watson was also upset that he wasn't included in the hiring process for Culley and the new general manager. Texans ownership previously told Watson that he's be able to weigh in on the hirings, but that never happened.
At the end of the season, Watson told reporters that the team needed a "whole culture shift. We just need new energy. We need discipline, we need structure, we need a leader so we can follow that leader as players. That's what we need."
With or without Watson in the locker room, Culley will be tasked with bringing "new energy."
Culley is a veteran NFL coach who has spent 27 seasons in the league, including the last two as the assistant coach for the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens will receive two third-round compensatory picks in return for Culley's hiring.
