Did you know that you could be missing out on some free money? Each state has a website for residents to search for lost money that may be owned to them. The unclaimed property may be the result of a business, government office, or other source that owes you money that you haven't yet collected, according to the U.S. Government website.
Unclaimed property can come in many forms, including checking and savings accounts, stocks, payroll checks, refunds, contents of safe deposit boxes, and more.
So how can people find their missing money?
Residents in South Carolina can simply go to southcarolina.findyourunclaimedproperty.com, search their name or business, and scroll through the list of names to see if they have any unclaimed property. As many people could share names, narrow down the search by city. Those who have moved from one state to another can also use multi-state database missingmoney.com.
According to the state's website, the Treasury Department has returned more than $361 million.
"Millions of dollars are transferred to the Unclaimed Property Program each year by companies that cannot locate the owners. Individuals, estates, businesses and even churches and charities can have unclaimed property," said South Carolina Treasurer Curtis M. Loftis, Jr. "I encourage you to search for any unclaimed property we may be holding for you or your family. We currently have over $650 million to claim. It's quick and easy and always free."
