A Sacramento County Superior Court defendant logged on for his Zoom court hearing while he was getting a haircut.
A screenshot from the Zoom call, obtained by CBS13, shows the defendant in his barber's chair. The photo was captured by Sacramento-based attorney Michael Wise.
While he doesn't represent the defendant, he was on the Zoom court call and found the moment too good not to capture.
"It was actually kind of a comedy relief moment, it was very entertaining to see,” Wise told CBS13. “With criminal courts, you kind of do get a slice of humanity, and with Zoom appearances, people are obviously becoming a lot more casual.”
Shocked by seeing the defendant, Derrell Jones, with his barber working right behind him, the judge in the case ordered the sentencing hearing be moved to another date.
"I think the judge wasn't sure how to deal with it at first," said Wise. "But eventually he said, 'You know what, you're going to have to come back on a different day when I have your full attention.'"
According to CBS13, the Sacramento region has seen its fair share of unusual court appearances now that they're happening through video conferences.
One attorney was caught with his shirt off during a Sacramento County Superior Court date. Another attorney logged onto a Zoom court call from his sailboat in Yolo County Superior Court.
