Milwaukee residents signed up for COVID-19 vaccine appointments in droves after a scheduling website activated early.
Though the website, city.milwaukee.gov/CovidVax, was supposed to begin accepting online appointments on Wednesday (February 3) at 2 p.m., some eligible residents — those age 65 and older — were able to book appointments earlier than that, according to WISN.
"I think I'm probably registered on about six websites and my primary doctor," Susan Bietila told the station. "I went to the site this morning and there were appointments open, so I signed up very easily."
Hundreds of people signed up for appointments, many expressing relief that they were finally able to schedule one.
City officials explained that the signup function was activated Wednesday morning to make sure it would work, and people eager to get an appointment were already signing up, according to WISN. They anticipate adding more appointment times.
For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit city.milwaukee.gov/CovidVax, or those with poor internet access can call 414-286-6800.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported nearly 547,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Thursday (February 4). More than 524,000 patients have recovered, and more than 16,000 cases remain active, state data show. More than 3 million have been tested.
