The Lunar New Year begins this Friday (February 12). For those unaware of the tradition, East Asian countries usher in the new year in their own ways between between January 20 and February 10. Lanterns, lion dances, drums and much more is a common sight during this time, especially in West Coast states with high Asian American populations.
The purpose of these celebrations is to cast out the negative spirits brought by winter and welcome the spring and good tidings. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Lunar New Year events are going to look much different. Some are virtual, while in-person events will have restrictions in place.
With that said, here are some Lunar New Year events to take part in if you're in Seattle.
Chinatown-International District Lunar New Year Food Walk
This event will be happening next Saturday (February 20), but it's one you shouldn't miss. While they couldn't have its traditional event this year, organizers are doing a free "food walk" instead. They'll release more details on the businesses participating.
Tết in Seattle
Seattle Center Festál is presenting Tết in Seattle this year in partnership with the organization of the same name. Tết is a celebration of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year. You will experience music, arts, performances and other activities tied to Vietnamese culture. They are also providing free health services, screenings, and medical support.
