A group of teenagers stole and took an ambulance on a short joyride in Sacramento on Monday evening, according to CBS13.

The Sacramento Fire Department said the teenagers stole the ambulance while responding to a medical call in North Sacramento.

The crews in the stolen ambulance were in the Beaumont Street and Plaza Avenue area, west of Del Paso Boulevard. It was in that area that the ambulance was stolen.

The group reportedly got inside the ambulance and drove it down the street before jumping out and running away.

Officials reported the teenagers failed to put the ambulance in park before abandoning it.

The ambulance began to roll down the street. Luckily, a bystander jumped into the rolling vehicle and put it in park, according to fire department officials.

CBS13 reports that the ambulance was empty when it was stolen and no one was hurt during the incident. The teenagers were not detained.

Ambulances are kept running while crews attend to patients in case of mechanical issues, according to the department.

While an incident like this one is rare, the department says there have been past cases of an ambulance and fire truck being stolen.

Two people tole a fire engine while Metro Firefighters were working on a brush call back in 2018, according to CBS13.
