Broomfield Police are now the third law enforcement agency to accept the myColorado Digital ID on a smartphone, reports CBS4.

Colorado is one of the first states in the country to adopt the new program of having your driver's license on your phone. However, wide acceptance of the program has been slow around the state.

Broomfield Police see the program as another resource.

"It works seamlessly with the system that we already use," Sgt. Scott LaFluer with the Broomfield Police Department told CBS4. "It's another tool that we have to use to identify somebody. People don't always carry their wallet or their ID, but they almost always have their phone."

Broomfield joins Colorado Springs and the Colorado State Patrol in adopting the new technology. Since accepting digital IDs, Broomfield says they've only used the technology for a few traffic stops.

Since Colorado Springs Patrol adopted the program in November, they have used it with 1,400 traffic stops, according to CBS4.

In addition to law enforcement agencies, about 300 restaurants, bars, and liquor stores have signed up to accept the digital ID.

"It's a fantastic resource for everybody though, it's something if you forget your wallet, well you still have your information because nobody forgets their cell phone when they leave the house," said CPS Trooper John Lewis.

The state says nearly 100,000 people have signed up for accounts through the myColorado Digital ID app.
