At least six people have died, and dozens more were injured after over 100 vehicles collided on an icy Texas highway. The crash happened at 6:30 a.m. local time on Interstate 35W in Fort Worth. The area was under winter weather advisory as a storm dumped sleet and freezing rain, coating the roads with about one-tenth of an inch of ice.

Firefighters were going car-to-car looking for people who were trapped. Authorities said it will take time to clear the road told drivers to find alternative routes.

The icy roads made it difficult for first responders to reach the scene of the pile-up.

"First responders actually had difficulty getting to the vehicles," Fort Worth Fire Department public information officer Mike Drivdahl said. "As they were making their way on the freeway to get to those vehicles, it is very slippery. We did have to get quite a bit of sand out here… we did everything we could to get as much traction as possible."

Officials are asking people to stay off the road due to the dangerous conditions.

"If you don't have to get out, please don't get out," Drivdahl told KXAS. "We have a lot of emergency crews doing a lot of work. The last thing we need is people who don't need to be out getting into any type of accidents."
