The driver who survived a 70-foot plunge from a Wisconsin interstate ramp recently spoke to Good Morning America from his hospital bed.

Richard Lee Oliver and his fiancé were “thankful” that he’s alive.

But he still needs to recover — and the public can help.

Candice Haid started a Go Fund Me campaign to help Oliver after the accident. As of Friday afternoon (February 12), it raised more than $3,900 of a $10,000 goal from 75 donors.

Here’s what Haid said on the Go Fund Me page:

“Richard was the driver in Milwaukee, WI that fell off the Zoo interchange ramp 70 feet down. He has multiple injuries that do not allow him to have the ability to walk or care for himself. He will need a special wheelchair and a home that is accessible for wheelchairs. Please help our family recover and get Richard to a stable place.”

On Wednesday (February 10), she added that Oliver was still “in the hospital, but we are hoping for a fast recovery.”

The accident happened around 9:49 a.m. on Saturday, February 6. In his pickup truck, Oliver traveled up a snowbank and “proceeded over the barrier wall and descended 70 feet down onto the westbound I-94 distress lane,” according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation video captured the jaw-dropping moment that Oliver’s truck fell from the ramp.

Two citizens at the scene stopped to help Oliver before first responders arrived.

No one else was hurt.
