A toddler managed to unlock his seatbelt and open the door of his mother's car as she was driving through a busy intersection in Sacramento, California. Motorists were stunned as the young boy tumbled out of the car into the middle of the street as she made a left turn.

Luckily, a California Highway Patrol trooper was nearby and stopped traffic while another driver rushed over to pick up the boy. He suffered bumps and bruises and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The mother told police that the child's father was using the vehicle with a car seat, so she just put her son in the backseat and buckled him up.

Under California law, all kids must be in a booster seat until they're eight-years-old or 4'9" in height, and all children under the age of two must be in rear-facing seats.

"Not only is it state law, but that's the most precious cargo you can have in the backseat of your vehicle," said Officer Jim Young with South Sacramento CHP.

The California Highway Patrol said it will recommend charges of child endangerment to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

"I think that having a two-year-old in the back of the car not properly restrained, I'm sorry that's just not the best you can do," said Young.
