The Denver International Airport (DIA) has added new detailed guidelines to its mask policy.

While the mask mandate has been around since last year, the Biden Administration has added new policies that have airport security monitoring how travelers eat and drink while waiting for their plane to board.

"Wear your mask if you have a drink in your hand but are not actively drinking it," said a spokesperson for DIA, Emily Williams.

While they're not prohibiting eating and drinking at the airport, officials do want to make sure people aren't using that as an excuse to keep their masks off for long periods of time.

"We've heard some feedback from some of our passengers that say, someone might be holding a drink in their hand for an hour and a half sitting in their gate not wearing a mask and we feel like that's not really taking the spirit of wearing a mask to heart," said Williams.

If someone is seen without their mask pulled up over their mouth and nose after a reasonable amount of time, they will be asked to put it back on or be escorted out if they refuse.

However, there are exceptions to the new rule.

If you are seated at a restaurant you can keep your mask off for the duration of your meal. But any interactions with the wait staff should be with a mask.
