House Speaker Nancy Pelosi revealed plans for a "9/11-type commission" to investigate the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol in a letter to House Democrats on Monday.
"To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to 'investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex,'" Pelosi wrote in the letter obtained by CNN.
The house speaker has previously called for a commission aimed to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol committed by supporters of former President Donald Trump and said she believes there is still a need for it.
The commission would need to be established by a statue and passed by both the House and Senate before being signed into law by President Joe Biden. Members of the commission will not be elected officials and instead be individuals from outside the U.S. government.
Pelosi had previously penned that it is "clear that we will need to establish a 9/11-type Commission to examine and report upon the facts, causes and security relating to the terrorist mob attack on January 6" in a previous letter to House Democrats sent out earlier this month.
The insurrection led House Democrats to quickly impeach former President Trump in January, but a Senate impeachment trial conducted over the weekend ended in Trump's acquittal on a single charge of incitement of insurrection.
