Hunter Hayes is finding freedom in his new song, “The One That Got Away.” The up-tempo, pop-leaning track is a celebratory anthem to leaving toxic situations and finding personal growth.
In a recent interview with Cody Alan, Hunter explained the phenomena that he is discovering by releasing this new song and reveals why he is now reading his social media comments.
“You know it’s interesting. I have had people in my ear anytime that I write something that’s a bit more empowering. There is a caution flag that goes up because there is an assumption that it’s about a specific relationship,” says Hunter. “I think what gave me freedom on this song and this process, it’s not about one specific relationship.”
“I wanted people to hear this and for it to connect with chapters of their life,” says the “I Want Crazy” singer. “I have talked to people about career changes, and like, big life changes, or moving to another city, those kinds of things through this song.”

“It’s so awesome to go on YouTube, which I normally don’t go on YouTube comments, but I love going on YouTube comments on this song because there are so many people who have said, “I am the one that got away.” I just love seeing that. I love seeing people realize their self-worth.”
