A family cat's curiosity may have saved them from what was called a "dangerous" situation in Lake Oswego, Oregon, according to KATU.

Sandi Martin told reporters she was playing with her cat Lilly on Friday (February 12) until the pet started sniffing at something. That something was the valve that goes to their fireplace. Martin said she leaned down to smell what her cat picked up on, recognizing the odor of natural gas.

She then called NW Natural to have a professional come check out the leak. “He tested the valve and saw that we had a dangerous gas leak. It could have been a disaster, but instead it’s a nice thing, she helped us," Martin said.

Lilly, who has feline leukemia and extra toes, was adopted from Cat Adoption Team, reporters said. "Cats with extra toes are considered lucky, which seems to be the case for Lilly," KATU wrote.
