As harsh winter weather brings freezing rain and ice to the region, Duke Energy projects around 1 million people across the Carolinas could lose power. According to ABC 11, the power company believes the wintry mix coupled with the high wind could knock out power for several days as it hits on Thursday.
Freezing rain could cause ice to accumulate on trees and branches, which could in turn fall on power lines and cause outages for many. Duke Energy has thousands of employees, including 5,400 line technicians and vegetation workers, ready to respond to any outages and emergencies that may occur.
Much of the country continues to face the impact from a winter storm that has left dozens dead and impacted power for millions of people across the country. Freezing rain and cold temperatures could cause ice accumulation on roadways and bridges, so drivers are encouraged to be cautious while on the road.
"Temperature is a major factor in these situations," said WCNC's Larry Sprinkle. "Even if the air temperature is above freezing at the surface, elevated areas could easily have temperatures at freezing or below. That's why bridges and overpasses can be dangerous, and why power lines and tree limbs can get a coating of ice."
