Freezing rain is making its way to North Carolina and bringing with it the potential for an ice storm that ultimately could cause widespread power outages. The majority of counties are under weather alerts, with parts of the state expected to get up to half and inch of ice, WRAL reports.

When the power goes out during a normal time of the year, it's more of a nuisance. However, it can be more dangerous if it goes out during an ice storm and freezing temps. To help you prepare for any potential problems, here's some things to remember before losing power.

  • Make an emergency preparedness kit with flashlight, batteries, money, first aid supplies, snacks, and more. Check out weather.gov for more suggestions.
  • Charge any phones and electric-powered devices, and make sure to have extra batteries for other appliances.
  • Make sure you have a full tank of gas in your vehicle.
  • Protect electronics and appliances from electrical surges by disconnecting and unplugging them.
  • A refrigerator can keep food cold for around four hours if the door remains closed. A freezer can keep its temperature between 24 to 48 hours.
  • Stay warm by dressing in layers and keeping your head and feet covered. Try wearing loose and warm clothing to help regulate body temperature.
  • Put towels under doors and around windows to help keep cold air out. Close all window blinds and doors.
  • Do NOT use a gas stove or oven to heat your home. Similarly don't keep a vehicle running in a garage or enclosed space as this could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • If using a generator, only do so outdoors and away from the home.
  • Come up with a back-up plan for any battery-operated or power-dependent device, such as a medical device. Check out ready.gov for tips for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
