Denver's 16th Street Mall has had quite a rough year. COVID-19 forced many of the businesses to close and protests throughout the summer left many of those businesses vandalized.

But 2021 is giving the mall a fresh start thanks to the Downtown Denver Partnership. Revitalization for the 16th Street Mall is scheduled to move forward this year.

"A vision for the redevelopment has been worked on for the past 10 years and we have had over 5,000 people plus... in our community weigh in on the vision, the concept, the hope for the future of the 16th Street Mall," President and CEO Tami Door told CBS4 over Zoom. "We have an infrastructure planned and ready to go."

The city of Denver has partnered with PCL Construction Services to start the next phase of the revitalization project. The phase will put bus lanes together and make better use of median space, reports CBS4.

"What's most exciting about this is it retains most of the concept of this mains street gathering space but it makes it even more impactful," said Door. "What that does is it gives wider sidewalk space for more opportunities for vendors and cafés and places to sit in an environment that is more open."

CBS4 reports that construction will take place over the next three years.
