A recent survey showed that 40% of teachers in Colorado are considering leaving the profession after this school year, reports FOX31.

After the survey's troubling results, the Colorado Education Association (CEA) is warning of a potential crisis for Colorado schools.

The CEA survey was conducted in December 2020 and received responses from over 5,000 teachers. Of those responses, 40% said they were considering leaving after this year.

The CEA currently represents over 39,000 teachers throughout the state.

Among the reasons they are considering quitting, teachers listed things like an unrealistic workload, potentially unsafe working conditions throughout the pandemic, and low pay.

"When educators don't feel supported, they leave," said CEA president Amie Baca-Oehlert in a press release. "When educators leave, students suffer. It's as simple as that."

In response, the CEA is pushing lawmakers to take the initiative and make changes that encourage teachers to stick with education. Changes like giving teachers and students access to personal protection equipment, COVID-19 tests and vaccines, and other safety measures to put them at ease about the safety of being in school.

The CEA is also requesting that standardized testing be postponed. According to FOX31, the association says it wants the state to postpone "high stake" standardized tests and focus on using the remainder of the year getting students caught up.
