What a difference a year makes…
Last year, Mary Jo Young says she was so shy that she refused to sing in front of anyone but herself.
Soon, you’ll be able to watch her audition for American Idol.
Young, 19, of Cleveland, overcame some of her timidness when she started sharing TikTok videos of cover songs at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Most recently, Young has covered “Riptide” by Vance Joy, “Supermarket Flowers” by Ed Sheeran, “When We Were Young” by Adele and tons of other popular fan faves.
Some of her covers even went viral, skyrocketing Young’s followers above 263,000, her TikTok shows Thursday morning (February 25).

She even has plans to release original songs by the end of next month, cleveland.com reported.
Though the Cleveland State University student considered a few nationwide talent competitions — including America’s Got Talent and The Voice — she opted for American Idol, explaining that it would offer a level playing field:
“I thought I’d do American Idol because everyone on the show sings. I don’t want to go up against someone who’s juggling fire because I don’t know how the heck that would go,” Young told cleveland.com. “It all happened in the blink of an eye. One day I was posting covers and all of the sudden I had people reaching out from shows.”
So, is she going to Hollywood?
She's not allowed to give spoilers, so you'll have to watch to find out.
You can see Young audition for Idol’s celebrity judge panel — Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan — when the episode airs Sunday (February 28) at 8 p.m. If you miss it, you can catch up on Hulu and ABC the next day.
