End Of An Era: Iconic Charlotte Ice Cream Shop Closes Its Doors

The end of an era has arrived. Beloved Charlotte ice cream and burger shop, Mr. K's Soft Ice Cream, is permanently closing its doors on Friday (March 5) after more than 50 years of doing business in South End.

In a post to its Facebook page, the shop thanked all of its loyal customers over the last five decades and sent its best wishes to the community.

"We appreciate the many memories we've shared with all of you," the post read. "Not many places in Charlotte make it 50+ years, but with your support, we've been able to join that elite crowd."

According to WBTV, Mr. K's owner George Dizes recently told the Charlotte Observer that the iconic building had been put up for sale. Dizes had run the iconic ice cream shop for years with his wife, Pamela, before she died in 2019. Since then, the news outlet reports, he has said he's ready to retire. It is currently unknown what will happen to the property, owned by SBLVD Sparta, once the shop shuts its doors for the last time at 5 p.m. Friday.

Customers commented on the shop's post, leaving behind well-wishes and thanking Mr. K's for treating them like family over the years.

"I am heart broken," one commenter said. "Your (family's) place was so wonderful. We are losing a part of history."

Before closing it doors, Mr. K's has one last wish for its loyal customers: "We hope you've felt the love from our family to yours."
