The effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom has gained enough support to force a recall election, according to its organizers.

They say they've received 1.95 million signatures from California residents in support of recalling Governor Newsom.

The announcement was made during an online meeting with leaders and volunteers from the campaign.

For a recall election to officially proceed, elections officials must verify that at least 1.5 million signatures match those of valid registered California voters, reports the Sacramento Bee.

The Bee says that in February, the Secretary of State's office reported that around 83% of the signatures on petitions were valid.

On Sunday, March 7, several hundred protesters stood outside the Capitol in Sacramento and demanded a new governor.

"We look forward to seeing who else we can get into the governor's seat that's going to help make California better," Joe Collins, who has been helping with the recall effort, told KCRA3.

A spokesperson for Governor Newsom also spoke to KCRA3 about the recall effort that's been going on throughout the pandemic.

"These Republicans want to waste energy, attention, and $100 million of taxpayer funds - all of which should stay focused on vaccinating, recovering, and reopening," said spokesman Dan Newman.
