Customers at Slyman’s Tavern paid it forward BIG TIME when they tipped their server more than $2,000.

Slyman’s Tavern is a longtime staple among Clevelanders, branching off from the original Slyman’s Restaurant location downtown, according to the restaurant. The nearly six-decade-old eatery has grown to be “loved and respected by all who come to enjoy the biggest and best corned beef sandwich.”

Last month, two women ate at the Rockside Road tavern for lunch. They unexpectedly bonded with their server over the same loss: all three are widowed, cleveland.com reported Tuesday (March 9).

With a 20% tip, the two women should have paid $119.40 for their meal. Instead, they left a $2,021 tip. They paid $2,121.21 total, according to cleveland.com.

Tanya [their server] could relate to them, because she lost her husband this past April, 2020,” Rebecca Riemer, marketing coordinator for Slyman’s Tavern, told cleveland.com. “They were bonding over that. The women said ‘You know, it’s Restaurant Week and we’re going to take care of you.’”

Riemer added that Tanya told the women she couldn’t accept their generous tip, but the customers insisted that they wanted her to have it and that “things are going to get better.”
